Personal Philosophy of Counseling

As a counselor, it is important to me that I offer you a safe compassionate environment where respect, empathy, and collaboration are self-evident. I welcome people of all ethnicities, races, sexual orientations, and spiritual backgrounds. I approach clients from a holistic perspective that incorporates emotional, mental, and physical attributes as well as spirituality and relational supports. Depending on your unique concerns, I will utilize interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, existential therapy, a trauma-focused approach, or Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Sessions will focus on increasing self-awareness, overcoming adversity, healing and adapting to changes in life.

During our initial intake session, we will assess your concerns, needs and strengths. We will identify changes you would like to make in your life and develop appropriate goals. In an effort to achieve your goals, it is important for you to take an active role in the process. Much of the change that counseling brings about occurs outside of sessions, therefore, I may ask you to do specific activities, such as write in a journal, read a book, or try out new behaviors between sessions. If you are open to new ideas and willing to take risks, we will be able to work together most effectively. While there are no guarantees of your outcome, therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to problems, and significant reduction in feelings of distress. Many people experience very positive outcomes because of counseling. All I ask from you is honesty and commitment to the process, and you certainly have mine.
